1- Defining News

Defining News

In the modern age of technology, most people have the world at their fingertips. With this accessibility comes an incredible exchange of important information that we call news. According to Merriam-Webster, news is the "report of recent events." We use news every day to inform ourselves of lifestyle changes, trends, and important political events. Whether we intend to or not, we are exposed to news daily. Even without the use of a physical newspaper, news is introduced through several different formats.

One of the most popular formats is news company websites and apps. Most news providers, from large companies such as CNN or FOX News to local news stations, provide these sources. No matter what the topic, you can find updates on elections, construction, economic issues, and various social issues. While certain companies, such as the Washington Post, often require a subscription to view their articles, these companies are extremely accessible to everyone with internet access.

Although news stations often cover pop culture, no source is more popular than social media. With the rise of apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok, short increments of news are provided to both adults and teenagers at incredible rates. Since technology has become so accessible to many people around the world, everything is filmed, from minute pieces of information to extremely important events. Within minutes of a statement from a government official taking place, edited videos can be found all over these apps nestled in between goofy videos of animals. In addition to extremely fast speed and accessibility, each social media account is altered specifically for each individual through the use of an algorithm. This allows for each person to receive news that is tailored to their own interests.

While social media is a simple news source to access, there are several instances of it being misused and providing false information. Since social media influencers have become increasingly popular over the last few years, many people look to those individuals for advice and news rather than certified news sources. Due to the spread of unverified information through social media, it is extremely important to always fact-check the information that is given to you through social media.

With the spread of accessible information, news has never been more widely available. Despite the amount of inaccurate information, the different forms of news providers have allowed people of all ages to experience news in a way never seen before.
