How AI is used in Journalism


Artificial Intelligence(AI) has been increasingly prevalent in today's journalism, and it is ingrained in almost every form of news source. AI has been used to both assist journalists and shape the way that news is brought to readers. While Artificial Intelligence has granted ease of access for many users, it is important to fully understand how it is used. 

One of the most prevalent uses of AI in news today is algorithms. According to The Washington Post, algorithms are systems used to personalize content that you see regularly. Algorithms are utilized in both news websites and social media. These systems can be based on your likes or shares for specific kinds of posts, or simply pages that you consistently click on. While algorithms can ensure that the content is personalized, they can also cause certain important news events to go unseen since AI does not believe that certain individuals will find them to be interesting. 


When it comes to writing, AI is an excellent way to lay down an outline of your project, and this method has been used by many journalists. With a simple prompt, AI programs can produce paragraphs of general information about a topic. This can cut down several hours of research that is required to accurately report certain topics, allowing journalists to release more information at once. 

Another widespread of AI is generative work, whether it be articles, images, or even videos. Journalists are able to produce work at an astonishingly fast rate with the assistance of AI such as ChatGPT. According to Forbes, certain AI can even use data to predict trends in media in order to allow news journalists to cover the newest topics. However, certain AI prompts can result in bias, which may result in an incomplete story. While this improvement has helped news sources release information to the media extremely quickly, relying too heavily on AI can occasionally cause some misinformation to slip into the mix. 


While AI has been utilized in many companies since 2010, there is always a risk of the data calculated by these systems containing inaccurate or completely false information. Due to this, it is extremely important to fact-check with other news sources in order to ensure that the information that you are reading is completely factual.

 My Summer With Daniel Springs Camp This last summer, I spent two months as a camp staffer at  Daniel Springs Baptist Camp in Gary, Texas. Daniel Springs is a Baptist summer camp where churches can bring their kids to spend a few days. Groups can rent out the camp for different events, or they can attend one of the four camps that take place throughout the summer.  Washington Post App The Washington Post is an incredibly well-known source of information for many Americans, and its app provides accessibility in several ways. The opening screen features several options including the latest news and top stories as well as more specific options such as opinion, well-being, lifestyle, and politics. These options ensure that every reader can easily find something informative or entertaining.  In addition to the vast amount of article options, the Washington Post app also includes a listening section where users can listen to podcasts or verbal explanations of the most current events. This makes the Washington Post stand out, since not every news app contains content for the visually impaired or people on the go who need to stay informed.  This app also does not require a subscription, unlike its parent website.  Judy Garland's Ruby Slippers Sell for $28 Million On December 7, a pair of ruby slippers used in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" were sold for $28 million dollars.  Heritage Auctions initially estimated that the shoes would be sold at $3 million. The bid eventually went to an auction participant over the phone.  According to  CNN , the shoes were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 2005. However, they were recovered by the FBI in Minneapolis during 2018. Currently, only four pairs are currently known to exist, with one pair residing in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.  Ruby Slippers Display at Smithsonian Museum Rhys Thomas, the author of "Ruby Slippers of Oz", stated that the slippers "transcended Hollywood, to the point where they represented the powerful image of innocence to all America."
