Southern Arkansas University Hosts Homecoming Festivities

Southern Arkansas University hosted its annual Homecoming celebration on Saturday, October 5, celebrating the "Ride of a Lifetime". The event drew in a large crowd full of students, alumni, and locals.

The day kicked off with a dedication to Eric "Berger" Engelberger at 10 a.m. According to Magnolia Reporter, several benches were placed at Berger Circle in the center of campus in order to commemorate his service to Southern Arkansas University.

Mulegating began at 11 a.m., inviting campus organizations to show off their booths in celebration alongside visitors. Groups of friends and family met at the Alumni Center in preparation for the game.

The Homecoming Ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Wilkins Stadium. Madison Johnson, a political science major from Smackover Arkansas, was crowned Homecoming Queen. Oreoluwa Onifade, a mechanical engineering major from Lagos, Nigeria was named Homecoming King. Johnson was nominated by the Student Activities Board while Onifade was nominated by International Student Services.

The annual Southern Arkansas University Homecoming football game followed the ceremony at 2:30 p.m., facing off against Southern Nazarene University. The evening concluded with a Greek show at 7 p.m. and a Black Student Association Reunion at 8 p.m.

 My Summer With Daniel Springs Camp This last summer, I spent two months as a camp staffer at  Daniel Springs Baptist Camp in Gary, Texas. Daniel Springs is a Baptist summer camp where churches can bring their kids to spend a few days. Groups can rent out the camp for different events, or they can attend one of the four camps that take place throughout the summer. My job as a staffer was to lead a small group of kids through daily lessons and rec games.  The summer started all the way back in May, when all of the staff arrived at DSBC to move in for the summer.  Judy Garland's Ruby Slippers Sell for $28 Million On December 7, a pair of ruby slippers used in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" were sold for $28 million dollars.  Heritage Auctions initially estimated that the shoes would be sold at $3 million. The bid eventually went to an auction participant over the phone.  According to  CNN , the shoes were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 2005. However, they were recovered by the FBI in Minneapolis during 2018. Currently, only four pairs are currently known to exist, with one pair residing in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.  Ruby Slippers Display at Smithsonian Museum Rhys Thomas, the author of "Ruby Slippers of Oz", stated that the slippers "transcended Hollywood, to the point where they represented the powerful image of innocence to all America."
